I recently left on a much needed 8-day vacation. The dog was relatively easy. I left her with a family who boards dogs. However, what to do about my plants? I water them twice a week because the heat and solar energy are drying. Amazingly, ALL my plants survived! In fact,the Hibiscus and Shrimp Plants are in full bloom, probably due to the angle of the light. The days are getting longer. Here's how to set up for vacation:

I watered everyone very thoroughly (the morning of my trip) and tried to group pots together for greater humidity. If there was a dish or plastic underneath, I let the water leak out through the holes.
I lowered the thermostat to 58 degrees, so that the air would be less drying; here was an opportunity to reduce heating costs.
I misted the leaves.

Plants like people are resilient and can adapt to their environment. The worst mistake gardeners make is overwatering - the death knell to plants causing root rot. However, a little drought and the plants can be restored with a good watering.

If you are going for a longer block of time, check out special products for moisture retention (which go into the soil) available at your local garden center. Or if you are fortunate to have a family or friend come water your plants, promise to return the favor.
