5 Key Tips for Dealing with Disappointment
Do you ever wonder why things turn out the way they do? Have you ever been so disappointed that your emotions got the best of you? We have all experienced some form of disappointment in our lives. Whether it was being passed over for that promotion, not getting the job we had hoped for, failing to see results quick enough or circumstances in our personal/professional lives just not turning out the way we imagined. There are going to be disappointments in our lives but it is how we deal with them that will make all the difference. It is okay to be disappointed however it is not okay to let disappointment get the best of us. Below are a few tips on how to deal with disappointment both in and out of the workplace.
1) Expectations. What are you expectations about a particular situation? Many times it is our expectations that set us up for disappointment. Changing our expectations and shifting our mindset can help better prepare us when things do not turn out the way we envisioned.
2) Acknowledge disappointment. We can experience many emotions when a situation does not turn out as we hoped. Sometimes we get angry, depressed, fearful, surprised and even disgusted. It is important to recognize when we are feeling disappointed and to experience this disappointment. When we are presented with disappointing news take a few moments to collect yourself so your emotions do not get the best of you. Allow yourself this time so you do not say or do anything you might regret or even worse get fired over.
3) Lesson. Most disappointments in our lives provide us with a learning opportunity. What did this teach us? Without challenges we cannot grow; recognize the lesson and learn from it. History has taught us that many great leaders have failed over and over and with each failure came disappointment but also much growth, opportunity and success!
4) Make adjustments. If you find you are disappointed because you failed to reach a target then readjust your goal. Revaluate and find out how you can make your goal more realistic. Shooting for the moon is a good thing but make sure you set small achievable benchmarks along the way to help you reach your lofty goal.
5) Never lose hope. The most important piece to remember about disappointment is to never lose hope. At sometime in your live you will experience a setback, failure or letdown. Pull yourself up and try try again. “We must accept finite disappointment, but never lose infinite hope” (Martin Luther King, Jr.)
